Fest of Epiphany

The Orthodox Christian Parishes of all Jurisdictions from Miami to Ft. Pierce is hosting a Celebration of the Feast of Epiphany on Saturday, January 13.  The Celebration will be held at Saint Catherine Greek Orthodox Church, located at 110 Southern Blvd. in West Palm Beach.

Metropolitan Alexios of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta will bless the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway.  Youth from parishes from Miami to Fort Pierce will dive to retrieve the cross which will cast into the Intracoastal.

The services begin with Orthros at 9am and the Archieratical Divine Liturgy at 10am.  The Procession, Blessing of the Waters and Diving for the Cross will take place at 12 noon.  It will be followed by a luncheon in the parish’s Hellenic Cultural Center.

All members of the community are invited to participate in this ancient celebration in which God manifests Himself to His people and calls upon them to also be shining lights in the world offering hope to all mankind.

During the first four centuries of Christianity the Feast of the Epiphany overshadowed the celebration of Christmas.  As the Church spread throughout the world and interacted with different cultures it adapted to cultural differences and the emphasis of the holiday season shifted in different parts of the Christian world.  In a sense celebrating the Epiphany is coming back to our historical Christian roots.
